Amazon employees are entitled to a number of benefits, such as parental leave, medical coverage, personal time off, vacation time, and a variety of other staff benefits.
Amazon gives 20 hours of Unpaid Personal Time (UPT) each quarter to all employees beginning in 2022. In addition, employees can use UPT anytime during the year. If an employee has less than zero hours of UPT, their supervisors or managers may terminate them.
Amazon: How does UPT work?
Amazon distributes 20 hours worth of UPT per tier one employee each quarter at Amazon’s start of each quarter. That adds up over 80 hours of personal unpaid time every year.
Amazon staff members are allowed to receive UPT any time of the year. This includes peak seasons, such as holidays.
Staff members are limited to storing 80 hours of UPT. Staff members who attempt to accumulate more than 80 hours UPT will often be fired.
Amazon employees are also required to pay VCP, or Variable Compensation Payment (VCP), every time they spend unpaid personal work hours.
Therefore, staff members who abuse their UPT will not only miss paid work hours, but the time will also be extracted from their wage.
Amazon gives UPT quite often.
Amazon provides UPT for their employees 4 times per year at the beginning each quarter. Either employees can use their UPT immediately or save the money to have it at the end.
Amazon grants 80 hours of UPT per year to employees at tier one, but the percentage of UPT that is dispersed could rise with Amazon employees moving up.
Are You at Risk for Amazon’s Use of UPT?
The staff member cannot be disciplined for exceeding the allotted hours of UPT, but they may get written up by Amazon for violating their clock out record.
Amazon is likely to terminate staff who accumulate more UPT hours each year than are granted, although some supervisors may opt to allow their employees to continue working with them.
Amazon workers should not take more than what they have been given. This could result in them being fired or put on unemployment.
Amazon: Are Sick days covered by UPT
UPT and sick days are separate entities for Amazon employees. Amazon staff can receive UPT for 80 hours and sick days for 80 hours every year.
Some Amazon employees may use their UPT in addition to their sick days if they are ill for a long period of time. The only way to get sick days is to make sure employees call in at least 24 hours in advance.
Additionally, Amazon staff are not recommended to use sick days like their allotted UPT, even if they’ve banked more sick days, as using such time requires more advanced notice.
Amazon’s UPT and Amazon PTO: Which is better?
Amazon staff members are granted both UPT (unpaid time off) and PTO (paid time off). The major difference between these two benefits is that UPT is not compensated time off, whereas staff members will still receive payment for their regular shifts when taking PTO.
Amazon offers 80 hours UPT to employees per year while giving only 40 hours in PTO. Therefore, employees are entitled to more unpaid time off than they are paid time off.
However, employees are not required to pay PTO for any unpaid time.
While staff may have more time for UPT, they should take PTO less often than for UPT to reduce the amount of lost wages.
