DeWalt DCD791D220V MaxXR Lithium Brushless Compact Drill/Driver Set For quicker work on more difficult jobs, the DeWalt 20V max xR lithium brushless compact drill/driver kit is faster than smaller 12-volt models, but it still retains all the outstanding ergonomics that make the 12-volt stand out.

For projects that will require drilling many holes or the installation of long screws, you should look into the DeWalt DCD791D2 $20 Max XR Brushless Compact Driver Kit. This drill has a higher voltage (20-volt) but shares the same essential features of the 12 volt DeWalt. The drill is extremely powerful, easy to handle, and comfortable to use. Even the small conveniences like the belt hook, the case and the bag are great. Compared with our 12-volt pick, this larger drill completes tougher jobs much faster, doing the same work in less than half the time, with a battery that lasts longer. The well-positioned LED can also be switched on independently of the drill, a unique feature that makes it a rudimentary flashlight, which could come in handy in nearly any crawl space. Although they are not required for most tasks in the home, these extra speeds and power can be very useful. They are useful for production work like putting in decking and building garden sheds.
Although it looks almost the same as the DeWalt 20,-volt model (with minor compromises), we recommend this model if you can find one at a better price, or if Milwaukee has already made you feel comfortable with their cordless tools.
*At the time of publishing, the price was $200.
DeWalt’s 20-volt drill might not be in stock. However, the Milwaukee 2801-22CTM18 1/2 inch is available. Compact Brushless Drill/Driver Kit . The DeWalt DCD791D2 is almost identical in its power, ergonomics, overall design, and functionality. There are two negatives to this drill: The only setting light is on the drill and there’s not enough space for driver bits or drill bits. These issues aren’t major, though. If you already own Milwaukee’s cordless tools or find that this drill is less expensive than the DeWalt then you might consider purchasing it.
DeWalt’s small 20-volt Atomic has more power than its 12-volt counterpart, but less than the bigger 20-volt. It’s a good choice for a DIYer to buy into DeWalt’s expansive 20-volt line.
Brushed Or Brushless?
This only includes drills powered by brushed motors. The traditional design of power tools with brushed motors has carbon brushes. They maintain contact between the spinning part and the motor’s motor. That means the brushes see constant friction when the drill is in use and will eventually wear out. This friction creates heat which can lead to a significant loss of torque efficiency, or energy that is converted to rotational force. Brushless motors operate primarily through magnets. They don’t have friction-inducing physical parts. You get better drilling performance over the life of the battery than if you had a drill with a brush motor.

The problem is that you may need to pay extra for an electric drill with a brushless engine. Milwaukee Model 2606-22CT is a brushed motor that costs $179. The brushless version, Model 2801-22CT, normally costs $20 more. You might find holiday deals that reduce this gap or make 18-volt drills more affordable than 12-volt ones. I will add brushless drill tests to this list on the next pass.
In rare instances, however, certain drills may not be able to provide the basics functionality that you would expect. If you keep reading, these are the pitfalls to avoid and will help you find the cordless power tool that suits your needs best. To ensure that I met my performance goals, I took sixteen popular brushed drills. Over 200 holes were drilled and over 4,000 screws were seated in a matter of days.

Better still, since there is no need to plug any cables in while you drill holes in the wall, cordless drills are more convenient and safer than standard high-powered power tools. Today’s cordless drills pack more punch than ever, due in no small part to the advent of the lithium ion battery. The Li-ion battery is lighter than old Ni-Cd (NiCd) batteries. They also last longer and hold their charge better when they aren’t in use. These type of batteries don’t mind being topped up from half empty either.

While cordless drills can operate at 18-40 volts, they are much more fatigue-inducing and heavier than higher-voltage ones. However, these tools will be far more productive in drilling large holes and driving large screws. This is especially true if you are drilling through large sections of steel or lumber. Select a battery with more amp hours (Ah) for longer run time. The average battery lasts between 2 and 6 Ah. You will lose weight if you get more run-time. A full-size, heavier tool is preferred over a small and lighter subcompact version to complete heavy tasks. Subcompact tools are more mobile than full-size drills. It’s easier to use for small jobs like hanging shelves and hardware, or building furniture. Perhaps you’ll find you can get more done by this tool.
Some cordless drilling machines come equipped with side handles that you can attach to and take out as required. If you plan a heavy construction project with the tool, this side handle will help you steady the drill with less fatigue and more control, should the tool bind in mid hole and kick back.
Drills with hammer options are required for drilling in masonry. This mechanism gives off a percussion motion to the bit while it rotates. It allows the carbide-tip mortar bit to chip away material.
Finally, look at the specs and package. Is the drill sold by itself without any batteries or charger? Or does it include a few batteries and charger along with a case and possibly a carry bag? Some drills come with a quick charger, which can quickly recharge the battery and bring it back to full charge within minutes. This is a cost-saving option. The rapid charger can speed up the process of finishing a project. 2 and Better”) using a sharp one-inch-wide Speedbor spade bit the classic design without a lead screw, easily resharpened with a single-cut metal file. Next, we drove 25 lag screws. Each screw was approximately 1/4 inches in diameter, and about two inches long. We then backed out each screw. After this, we resumed drilling holes using our spade bit. The thermal overload circuit in the tool stopped us from drilling. We continued drilling holes until the drill died. After the drill and battery had cooled for fifteen minutes, we resumed hole drilling. We drilled 1,510 holes, and drove 375lag screws during this test.
It’s obvious that this test is difficult. It takes lots of torque to send a one-inch-wide spade bit through Douglas fir framing lumber, particularly at the bottom of the hole where maximum friction occurs. It is true that the pro-grade tools are more suitable for this task than larger, heavier-duty models. It allowed us to see which homeowner-grade tools could produce surprisingly impressive performances.
This Bauer is a DIY-level drill from Harbor Freight that is stubbornly persistent. This drill is not fast or easy to use, and it won’t even punch one inch holes as quickly as other tools. Still, it did manage to work its way through each hole, eventually racking up a respectable number when paired with a 5-Ah battery. It could put in 25 lag screw without difficulty, and it even backed them out. The best setting for lag driving performance was two speed (highest speed), and 21 clutch ring. This allows maximum driving torque to be achieved before the clutch disconnects the motor from the drivetrain. These speed control switches and the clutch are easy to set. To top it all, the Bauer comes with a ergonomically-designed grip and a bright working light.
