Maintaining your outdoor area is a top priority during the warm summer months. A quality garden hose is a useful and long-lasting household tool that can help you maintain your outdoor space, whether you are interested in gardening or just want to clean up the outside of your vehicle.
Kristiana Laugen of Handy, a home-care expert said that selecting a garden hose is an investment. A hose with the correct length, material, and pressure can last for a decade. However, it is difficult to find the right hose for your needs. Laugen also mentioned that they are an investment. A good quality reel, hose and nozzle can run upwards to $100. Our team consulted garden experts for help in choosing the right garden hose. We also compiled some expert recommendations.
Our Choice
Dramm ColorStorm Premium – Rubber Hose, 50 Feet. This is the best garden hose. Although it’s not cheap, and may be difficult to handle, its sturdy fittings and robust body will last years.
Amazon $58* $94 Walmart
Dramm ColorStorm Premium – Rubber Hose, 50 Feet. While it isn’t the least expensive hose, however, we have found that the best value garden hoses are the ones you can purchase once and continue to use. Dramm’s incompressible nickel-plated brass couplings feature large flat facets that you can grasp with a wrench and locking pliers to loosen a connection. Dramm offers a solid support team and a lifetime warranty. We’re sure that Dramm won’t be beaten on this promise. You can use this hose for many utility tasks. However, it may be too heavy to quickly water small plants.
Advertisement Continental Commercial Grade Rubber Hose (50 feet) A solid standard hose This simple, dependable hose is a good midrange value it’s far tougher than the bargain options, and it’s often easy to find for an excellent price.
Home Depot: $43*
It’s not quite as polished on all the details as our pick, but the Continental Commercial Grade Rubber Hose (50 feet) is an excellent value: It’s tougher than the cheapest hoses by a mile, and for not much more money. It looks very much like the Craftsman Rubber Hose we recommend for many years. Although this model is now difficult to find, you can still get the Continental at your local hardware store and home center. Although the Continental may seem bulky for very small jobs like watering plants, it can be a great choice for people who need something durable, reliable, easy to use, and that isn’t too fussy for larger landscaping or maintenance projects.
This coiled hose can be easily stored, is lightweight and manageable. It’s ideal for small patios, which don’t require a lot of water volume or range.
$40* from Hose Coil *At the time of publishing, the price was $35.
HoseCoil 3/8-inch Self-Coiling Garden Hose 25ft is not as durable nor long as the other choices, but it works well for small spaces such as a balcony or patio where carrying a 50-footer around feels excessive. HoseCoil’s retractable corkscrew design is the main draw. It makes it easy to store, extend and recoil. The HoseCoil is a 3/8 inch hose with a smaller diameter. It has about 25% less capacity than the larger models. That means it will produce slightly lower pressure when compared to other hoses. Although the HoseCoil’s total length is 25 feet, in practice it’s really good for only about 17 feet before it starts to strain. As with our heavier-duty picks, the HoseCoil’s nozzle end has flat facets for a wrench to grab. Its 2-year warranty is comforting. Although we have heard of HoseCoils that last much longer than we expected, we believe the HoseCoils will be able to meet their two year mark. Our test unit has been doing great after prolonged Southern California sun exposure.
What To Consider When Shopping For A Quality Garden Hose
The length is the most important. Hoses usually come in 25-foot increments, most often topping out at 100 feet. The right hose length is the one that makes the most sense for your setting. Use a flexible tape measure to determine the right length for your use. A 50 foot hose should be sufficient to water most suburban gardens, as well as for tasks such washing cars, spraying decks and watering potted plants.
There are hoses available in 75 and 100 foot lengths. However, these will cost more to get replaced and be harder to procure. To increase the length of your hose we suggest starting with 50 feet. You could then connect to additional hoses as required, such a shorter coil or coil hose. You can replace a section of the hose if it wears out or swells up.
The average hose diameter is between 1/2- 3/4 inches. A longer diameter can move water faster per minute. For the same length of time, 3/4″ hoses can carry three times as much water per minute as 1/2″ hoses.
Garden hoses come in a variety of materials. Rubber garden hoses are generally the most durable and versatile but can cost more, such as $50+ for a 50-foot hose. The rubber hose is resistant to cracking or kinking but can also be heavy when it’s filled with water. The hose reel may be useful for facilitating storage. Tip: Keep rubber hoses away from direct sunlight as they are more susceptible to UV-light damage. Another durable material is stainless steel. However, it is less flexible than rubber hoses. It is also resistant to kinks or leaks. The cheapest hoses are typically synthetic materials like vinyl. In warm climates (no freezing winters), a cheaper synthetic hose is a good choice. They are also lighter and better suited for those with restricted lifting mobility.
Also, it is vital to choose durable fittings. Metal fittings like brass and copper are more durable than plastic. Also, a hexagonal-shaped fitting can be a good feature. It allows you to attach a wrench to untighten a tight seal.
Experts don’t typically recommend drinking from a garden hose, so we didn’t prioritize this product claim, but if you’re concerned that your hose delivers water to vegetables or herbs and want one that’s safe enough to drink, look for one that’s labeled “drinking water safe.” Like most garden tools, you get what you pay for when selecting a garden hose. Lower quality hoses tend to be made from thinner material that can kink. Leakage can be caused by cracks or holes that result in kinks. In short, cheap hoses spring leaks and fail sooner than their pricier counterparts. When researching and testing the recommended garden hoses, we considered these important factors.
Dramm ColorStorm Rubber Hose has all of the qualities you want in a hose. This 5/8 inch hose, made of EPDM rubber and nickel-plated brass couplings, is 50 feet in length. Kelly Smith Trimble, master gardening expert and editorial director for HGTV.com says Dramm hoses have a hexagonal pattern that makes it more resistant to kinking. There are many color options to help brighten your garden. This hose also has the American flag.
Best Runner-Up Garden Hose: Craftsman Rubber Garden Hose Amazon
Craftsman rubber gardening hoses make a solid option. It is similar to the Dramm Hose and features nickel-plated brass fittings that are hexagonal and crush-resistant. This durable rubber hose is also kink and abrasion resistant. Unfortunately, this particular hose is not always in stock. You can order this Flexi Hose expandable hose online, or you could pick it up in store at Ace Hardware. It weighs just about three pounds, is made of an elastic outer fabric with four layers of latex that allows it to expand when filled with water and features brass fittings. This hose also comes with an adjustable nozzle, which saves you from buying one separately, but our tester did note that the nozzle felt a bit cheap and didn’t have a “jet” feature strong enough to remove tough dirt and grime like other nozzles she’s owned. Overall, she loves how lightweight the hose is compared to her old hose and that it takes up less space by the spigot. Additionally, the fabric looks better and feels more durable than rubber hoses which tend to crack in yards.
Long Water Hose Solution 01/09
With this easy solution, you don’t have to struggle with water hoses for long periods of time.
A soaker hose is a great option for a vegetable garden with a high water requirement. To save time and effort, instead of carrying around a rubberhose all the way from storage to your garden you can just leave it in gardens. Another perk of using soaker hoses for vegetable gardens is that they water at the root level and avoid getting water on the leaves, which can cause mildew and other plant problems. Rocky Mountain Goods has a PVC liner that is reinforced with additional strength fabric. Our tester liked this soaker hose because it was simple to attach and allowed her vegetables to soak in the water for only a few minutes. Jackie McGilvray is HGTV.com editor. She says, “I love that it is lightweighted and easily moveable.” The hose was flattened out of its box and I didn’t have to put it down. Flexzilla Lightweight Garden Hose Walmart – This Flexzilla hose has been a huge hit and is highly rated because of its light polymer material. The Flexzilla hose has a 50-foot length, aluminum fittings, and an outer cover made of durable polymer that is impervious to UV damage, abrasion, and mold. While it was lightened than stainless-steel hoses and rubber, we found it to be less kink-resistant. We’re skeptical that it would hold up as well over time, but it’s a great option if you want something cheaper and/or only have infrequent watering needs versus a demanding summer vegetable garden.
Top Stainless Steel Garden Hoses: Bionic Steel Pro Heavy–Duty Stainless Steel Garden hose Amazon
Although our test preferred this stainless-steel option to the Craftsman rubber version, the tester did prefer the Bionic Steel Pro. It’s kink-resistant and very sturdy it even survived a car running over the couplings! It can withstand rust, rips, and has brass fittings as well as an on/off button. An hose made of stainless steel may be an option for those who move a lot or have to use their yard with a lot more machinery.

Types Of Garden Hoses
Garden hoses have evolved to offer a wide range of options, including lightweight, economical hoses for daily watering and high-pressure models for heavy watering. There are even expandable gardenhoses available for purchase that will stretch all the way when water is turned on, and then fold down to store at a third. The best type of Hose to buy will depend on the watering needs.
The smallest hoses are better suited for smaller yards with a small number of plants and raised beds. These hoses are typically reasonably light in weight (around 2 to 4 pounds), making them simple to coil and store on a hook in the garage.
Standard: These gardenhoses, also known as “medium-duty”, are used for watering the lawn. They’re heavier than light-duty, at around 4 to 10lbs. These garden hoses might also be longer and better stored on a hose reel.
Heavy-duty: Best suited for weathering the elements and to use with pressure washers, heavy-duty garden hoses feature thicker materials and are more kink resistant . The cost of heavy-duty garden hoses may be up to twice that of standard and light duty hoses.
Expandable: These are the new kids on campus. Expansible hoses can be used to expand. These hoses become longer when water is added to them. They are usually between 25 and 50 feet in length. You can attach them to wands or sprinklers to water raised beds and pots.
The Soaker: This type of hose is more efficient at conserving water than other types. Instead of spraying water that will evaporate, soakerhoses deliver water directly to plants’ roots. For landscaping, raising beds or along rows with vegetables, a soaker hose can be a good choice.
Flat: Tubular when filled with water, a flat hose returns to a completely flat shape when empty, making it easy to roll up and store. These hoses are suitable for basic watering and sprinklering, with some flat hoses being used as soakers.
6. Melnor Flat: Best Soaker
Even though lawn maintenance involves watering the grass, not all plants like having to be sprayed. The spread of disease can be promoted by damp foliage.
Instead, a deep watering at the base of the plant is best, and the Melnor Flat Soaker Garden Hose is just the tool to do that with.
Users describe it as a flexible, flat design that can easily be weaved around plants and through potters. It’s a very popular product among gardeners with straw bale gardens. This type of construction also makes it easy to fold and store.
The fitting size is a standard 3/4 inches. It is available in sizes 25-, 50 and 75 feet. You can also remove the cap and connect multiple hoses.
For semi-permanent garden installation, you can place it in a mulch layer. But, too much of a cover will hinder its ability to perform.
However, it’s less sturdy than traditional models. Some people also complain about leakage. However, the latter issue seemed to be more of a problem when the hose was left out continually, rather than rolling it up and storing it after each use.
This product is made from PVC, ABS plastic, and polyester. It comes with a two-year limited warranty.
