A perfect latte

Hard to find. This latte is a smooth blend of creamy microfoam, rich espresso and smooth steamed milk. According to Felix Torres, De’Longhi’s barista partner, a latte is technically a one-shot espresso shot (or twice for greater flavor and caffeine), 8 to 10 ounces milk and up to three quarter inches of foam. That precision makes brewing lattes and cappuccinos daunting: Do you really need to invest in both an espresso machine milk frother for a latte that rivals your favorite coffee shop?

Luckily, latte machines exist. These coffee makers can both make espresso and foam milk. They also have the capability to brew cappuccinos or macchiatos.

The Good Housekeeping Institute’s Kitchen Appliances & Technology Lab tested a range of popular brands as well as highly-rated models. They use coffee pods or ground coffee to brew espresso, and come with built-in frothers. The machines were tested for cleanliness and ease, loudness and consistency. Also, we tested their ability to brew, heat and frost quickly. Our preference is for latte makers that produce smooth and tasty espresso. and froth both milk and milk alternatives quickly and quietly. The frother should produce luxuriously creamy and hot milk with just the right amount of foam. Here are our choices for the best latte-making machines.

The Best Latte & Cappuccino Makers

A great cappuccino or lattes is like a warm, rich cup of coffee. Just writing about these delicious, warming drinks makes me want one. Unfortunately, it can be hard to create the perfect cap and caffe latte from home. Barista-worthy espressos are difficult enough. But adding just the right amount milk and foam to get it perfect is quite a challenge.

Mid-2018 saw me dive headfirst into the world advanced coffee equipment to learn what makes them tick. More than one dozen machines were tested by me with the latte- and cappuccino functions. Others made espresso with coffee shop-style portafilters. They also came equipped with milk canisters to froth the espresso. Other single-use pods had separate foamers. Some machines even included steam wands or advanced options. These machines make the perfect latte, cappuccino.

All-around Best

Photo: Mr. Coffee Mr. Coffee One touch CoffeeHouse ($260) This machine from Mr. Coffee is at an ideal intersection between automation, ease, and affordability. It can extract a flavorful espresso from almost any beans and grind, and its milk reservoir will automatically mix a cappuccino or latte for you.

The Mr. Coffee Cafe Barista is a stronger, more robust version. It has a better portafilter basket to take ESE coffee pods, and a bigger milk reservoir which snaps in more securely. You have to place your coffee into the basket, then turn it on. The machine can also make a cappuccino (or latte macchiato) for you by pressing a button. You can choose from two sizes and there is a manual mode, which allows you to keep the machine extracting or foaming your espresso until you stop it.

On the downside, you’ll need to clean the milk canister at least once a week. It can be kept in the refrigerator. It also won’t extract quite as much rich espresso flavor as the Breville machines below, but it is a lot easier to use. One day, for fun, I put standard Maxwell House coffee into it. While it did not produce a Maxwell House like espresso, it still produced acceptable Maxwell House coffee right down to the last drop. The espresso is as good as any other.

Most Convenient, Easiest Cleanup

Keurig K-Cafe ($170). The best Keurig that I have used (8/10, WIRED Recommended ), and it has the best coffee maker of all the machines I tried for this guide. While the K-Cafe technically doesn’t make espresso shots as the K-cup doesn’t pressure its grounds, it makes delicious 2-ounce espresso-style shots that taste just as strong and without any crema.

The real magic is the frother. You can set it to make a cold, hot, or warm cappuccino. Then, just tap a button and your milk will be frothened perfectly. After it has finished, just pour your milk using the handle at the bottom. The jug itself is stainless steel. The plastic spinner can also be taken off. Cleanup is as quick as an under-the-water faucet. It was so simple to use and clean that I sometimes frothed milk with it even when I used other machines to make my espresso. The frother worked so well that even though it was intended for right-handed users, it didn’t bother me. This lefty was happy to adapt.

A bonus: Keurig’s single-use pods can be recycled in 100 percent. Keurig makes reusable coffee filters. We recommend sticking with the brand-named ones as they are less reliable than the cheap dupes.

These are not reviews of espresso machines. While they all make great espresso machines, this article will concentrate on the aspects that make these the most effective latte machine.

Breville Barista Express EES870XL is our top rated latte maker. This latte-making machine is very well-received and is the perfect choice for any home-barista who would like to switch to a more powerful, yet user-friendly, coffee- and latte-making machine.

This semi-automatic machine was made with both great coffee and happy consumers in mind. You get top-quality parts at a reasonable price. However, the machine is also equipped with smart little features like “no-slip feet” that prevent it from moving. Plus, the built-in conical burr grinder means you don’t need to buy a separate grinder. Even worse, buying pre-ground coffee when making espresso. The machine can be used to grind all the coffee beans before they are brewed.

Another great feature is the digital temperature control (between 19-22 grams per dose) and dose-control grind (between 19-22 grams per dosage), which allow for fine tuning of coffee flavor. The grinder size control makes it possible to customize the amount of crema that you wish. Pre-infusion at low pressure precedes the brew cycle, which operates at 9 bar pressure to achieve optimal espresso extraction. A separate hot water dispenser is available to pre-heat your latte cups or prepare tea and other hot drinks.

To latte-lovers, though, it is important that the steam wand has a 360-degree swivel motion.

This steam can make it as easy as 1, 2, 3, to make lattes.

The machine this time is quite larger than the previous two. It’s also quite tall at 16 inches. So make sure that you leave some room for this machine while it ships to your home.

DeLonghi’s shockingly affordable espresso and latte machines has got all expresso geeks buzzing. That’s because, while far from the fanciest model, it easily outperforms options twice its price.

The name of the game with the EC155 is convenience. It’s compact and easy to use, with self-priming operation, a single dial control, and virtually no learning curve. The best part is that it’s very easy to clean up and maintain. It is dishwasher-safe and removable. Both the 35-ounce reservoir and drip tray heat up quickly. Two separate thermostats ensure the perfect temperature for espresso and steam.

This semi-automatic Breville machine ranks number 1 and is our favourite home latte maker. In fact, this budget friendly option ranked amongst some of the well known behemoths in our best espresso machine guide where we ranked the best overall options available. This is a good result considering the Infuser’s price tag.

First, the Breville Super Automatic Breville’s stainless-steel finish is stunning. It can make high quality espressos with its many bells & whistles. If the silver stainless steel look isn’t your thing, you’ll be happy to know there are multiple color options for this model. Installing one of these will instantly make your kitchen feel like you’re in your favorite coffee shop.

This one touch semi automatic espresso maker uses a proprietary pre infusion technique that applies just a little bit of water at the start of the extraction which helps expand the coffee grounds. The Breville then forces the hot coffee through using precisely controlled temperature water thanks to its auto purge function. The result is a great shot (or two) of espresso.

If you are on the hunt for a machine that can make a delicious latte, then you’ll be happy to know that the Infuser comes with a steam wand for producing that much needed foamy milk. This will make you the perfect barista.

Last, even though we are on the hunt for the best latte machines, you’ll be happy that the Infuser can make other drink options as well. You will be able recreate favorite café classics at home by using the Infuser’s ability to extract one to two shots. This latte machine will allow you to enjoy better coffee while saving money.

While we like this machine, the integrated grinder is missing a crucial component. There is no reason to buy a grinder if your machine can already grind espresso-quality coffee. There is no need for an upgrade as these machines will pull off exceptional shots of espresso.

The Infuser is available in two sizes. You can get a machine that is capable of rapid brewing, multiple brewing options and an excellent burr grinder for a few hundred more dollars.

Why are Latte Machines so Expensive?

Espresso machines can be expensive due to their high quality construction. They must also have the ability to withstand temperature and pressure.
