All-in-one vacuum for pet hair
James Brains/Insider $5999.99 at Best Buy Dyson. The Dyson V11 Pet Cord-Free Vacuum collected all the hair we tested and was very easy to empty the dustbin.
The pros include: Excellent suction, particularly when removing pet hair. It also has contact-less debris removal. Dyson V11 Animal Cord-Free Vacuum’s quality is a great example.
Dyson claims that the V11 Animal was designed for large homes and pets. For the most part, this bore out in our tests. This was one of three vacuums that collected all the pet hair from all surfaces tested. The hair also didn’t get caught in the brush.
This Dyson vac also did an outstanding job of picking up other debris on hardwood and furniture, leaving behind just a trace of flour. V11 had to deal with flour, as it left around 17% of the flour behind.
All of the vacuums that I tried failed to perform well in any category. The V11 Animal did poorly for ease of use. To get the vacuum to work, you must keep the trigger down. I wrapped a bit of duct tape around the trigger to make it work.
Remove the attachments to empty your dustbin. If you don’t have it positioned just right, the bin’s trap-door release could send debris flying. I enjoyed the way the bin was emptied. It didn’t leave my hands dirty.
The battery was not impressed. In boost mode it lasted for nine minutes. After that, it took almost four hours to recharge. The boost mode was more powerful than any other cordless vacuums that I tried. Eco mode lasted the battery for 75 minutes and Auto mode for 45 minutes.
Dyson’s eco mode can be used for the majority of your uses. It claims it lasts 60 minutes and will charge once. It can be removed, so additional batteries are available at $150. On the positive side, V11 Animal was simple to use. It moved easily perpendicularly to me. It was not possible with non-Dyson vacuums. The V11 Animal also comes with an attached docking station wall-mounted that stores all attachments.
Top Budget Vacuum for Pet Hair
James Brains/Insider $154.99 from Amazon. $154.49 From Bissell The Bissell CleanView Swivel Rewind Vacuum Cleaner does an excellent job collecting hair from pets.
There are many pros to this vacuum: They picked up the hair on all our test floors. I can’t recommend any of them. The budget pick we chose is priced at $150. But it’s well-worth the money.
CleanView Swivel was one of three vacuums tested for picking up pet hair. The brush also didn’t get the hair tangled.
While its ability to pick up other debris was just average on carpeting and furniture, it did exceptionally well on hardwood. On every surface, it picked up all of the cat litter and Cheerios. It struggled with the coffee grounds on carpeting and only did a so-so job of collecting flour in all of the tests.
Simple to use, the Bissell CleanView Swivel Rewind was a delight. The swivel head makes it easy to maneuver with one hand. It was easy to retract the cord (the “Rewind”) so it didn’t get in my path. Also, because it is upright I don’t need to carry the weight of the vacuum. Just guided the vac as it dealt with any mess. For higher elevations, the hose came off easily.
However, I had a hard time emptying the dustbin without getting my hands dirty or inadvertently sending gunk flying outside of the trash can. It is best to remove the trapdoor from the trash can by placing the bottom into the container.
Best Handheld Vacuum For Pet Hair
James Brains/Insider $195.23 from Amazon If you’re looking for a vacuum that’s easy to use on furniture and in cars, consider the Black+Decker Powerseries Extreme Cordless Stick Vacuum Cleaner with its outstanding performance in its handheld configuration.
The pros: Cleans well all surfaces. These vacuums are therefore not suitable for recommendation. We will test more models for future updates to this guide. While we are still testing models, we decided to make a handy handheld version. Black+Decker’s Powerseries Extreme Cordless StickVacuum Cleaner, in its handheld form, is your best option.
Powerseries Extreme vacuums are handheld and pick up any pet hairs on furniture, as well as cat litter, flour, etc. You can also use it as a handheld vacuum, so your arm doesn’t get tired from holding the device for long periods.
Although the stick vacuum mode was less effective, it still performed admirably. It picked up all the Cheerios and cat litter from hardwood and carpet. The Black+Decker vacuum only collected 85% of pet hairs and flour from both carpeting and hardwood.
The rubberized bristles kept the tangles away and I loved how the brushroll head pivots to allow for tight turns. My experience with the vac was that it did a better task of collecting any debris when pulled toward me instead of pushing away.
Emptying the dustbin was a tidy affair. I found it was easy to place the gunk in the trash can due to the narrow opening. Also, the trap door released the particles so they were not in my hands.
Black+Decker Powerseries Cordless Stick Vacuum Cleaner has a battery that is the biggest issue. Our tests showed that the battery scored in the middle for high-power. It was however one of the most difficult to charge. It is possible to remove it and purchase additional 20V lithium ion batteries. They work with all Black+Decker Cordless Tools.
The Best Robot Vacuum for Pet Hair
James Brains/Insider $399.99 $299.99 from Amazon Walmart $399.99 $399.99 Target Target $4999.99 $299.99 Target. Our tests showed that the SpinWave Robot Vacuum vacuum collected all hair on our carpet and had a large selection of mop attachments.
Pros: Quiet operation, app connectivity, picked up all of the pet hair in our tests, small size, great mop attachment and accessories, great job on corners and hardwood Cons: Gets stuck easily, can’t set up no-go zones, can’t clean furniture If you have pets that shed heavily and are tired of vacuuming every day, a robot vacuum may be your best bet. The robot vacuums don’t offer the same suction power as other vacuums and are limited in their dustbin capacities. For automated daily cleaning however, a robot vacuum will be indispensable.
Because robot vacuums can be independent, I used a different test method. Our robot vacuum guide has more information about our testing process. Based on the results of my tests with dozens of robotic vacuums, I found that the Bissell SpinWave Robot Vacuum was the most effective for pet hair. It was capable of picking up pet hair from both carpeting and hardwood. And it only left traces of flour and kitty litter behind on hardwood. It also did a great job of going deep into corners.
Robot vacuums can sometimes be a bit scary for pets. The SpinWave is quieter than any other model that I have tried. It’s loudest on high suction is 65 decibels, which is a bit more than normal conversations. On quiet mode it only emits 58 decibels.
This attachment features spinning mop pads which do a great job cleaning dry-on liquids and avoiding carpets. I found that the mop attachment is ideal for cutting out hairs caught in the brush. However, this problem was rare in my tests.
SpinWave can be scheduled to clean the same day every day. You also have the option of scheduling it at the exact time or mixing it up with Bissell Connect. It is impossible to set no-go areas to prevent it. You may have to create a physical barrier to keep them out. Robot vacuums may not work well if pets have frequent accidents. They could spread the filth and cause damage.
Did You Test Anything Else?
James Brains/Insider We tested 13 vacuums for this guide. These are those that didn’t make it into the guide.
Why is so important?
Bissell MultiClean Allergenlift-Off Pet, Model2852 : We tested this and the Bissell cleanView swing rewind upright vacuums. CleanView Swivel REwind is more affordable, and it does a better job at picking up pet hair. Even if the MultiClean Allergen Lift Off PET is cheaper than it, don’t hesitate to buy it, especially if you have a heavily carpeted home.
Model 2894A of Bissell ICONpets – Easy to use, long battery life, fast charging, the ICONpets were the best. In its portable configuration, it was able to pick up all manner of cat litter and flour. The dustbin could be easily emptied. But, 23% of the hair remained on carpet and furniture.
Dyson V15 Detect: The most expensive Dyson V15 detector we tried was $700. It has a bunch of fancy, high-end features, such as a screen that gives you a rundown of what size and how much particulate matter it sucked up. While it cleaned everything, the pet hair remained on carpeting and other furniture. While I appreciated the fact that it charged in just four hours, the maximum time of top-power was only eight minutes. It was also tiring to operate in handheld mode.
Shark Vertex DuoClean PowerFins AZ2002 – The suction was incredible with this upright vac. It felt as if I were trying to control a shark. It worked well on hard floors and carpet. It was simple to use. The downside was how difficult it was to empty and not send particles flying.
Why We don’t recommend it and what we think:
Black+Decker’s Dustbuster Model HVK515JP07 was easy-to-use, inexpensive, and provided the longest lasting battery life. But it couldn’t get a great job cleaning any surface. The dustbin appears to have had a flap that was not secured to the lid, which allowed a lot more of the dirt it picked up to fall to the ground.
Bissell Pet Hair Eraser It’s just not pleasant to use. Because the opening is so narrow, cleaning up any mess can take several steps. Cheerios clogged it. When I turned off the power to the machine, the flour would return from my head. Then it became difficult for me to get rid of all the trash.
Black+Decker Spillbuster Portable Carpet Cleaner: This handheld cordless carpet cleaner is made to remove wet hair. This guide is for vacuums that remove pet hair and dry messes. This vacuum failed to perform in our tests. But, I’m looking forward for a guide that covers the best vacuums on pet waste.
Can You Use a Vacuum to Clean Pet Hair?
You can use vacuums even though they’re not made to remove pet hair. There are some features that set vacuums apart from other models.
You can make your vacuum suitable for pet hair by using strong suction, excellent filtering, and specially designed cleaner heads. The vacuum head can loosen dirt from furniture and carpet fibers. Your air will be filtered through a sealed filter that traps any particles.
You should ensure that your vacuum has an HEPA filter if you are concerned about the allergens present in your home. These filters are commonplace in air purifiers. They capture 99.7%of 0.3-micron particles.

What are the top pet hair vacuums?
These pet hair vacuums are the best on the market and range from handheld to canister to standard uprights. All of them have great reviews from dog people, online and in our Rover community some have been tested in-house.
Ok, let’s just say it. It is very expensive. It’s very costly. The Miele can be expensive but it is worth the investment. This vacuum is among the top-rated for cleaning pet hair. Rover employee who has a high-shedding, husky-mix dog says the Miele is her best choice. The Miele has a typical one year warranty and there are Miele dealer locations across the country to help with repairs.
It has an air-cleaned sealed filter system. This eliminates pet smells as well as pet hair and pet dander. The dusting brush, crevice tool, and upholstery tool get those hard-to-reach areas, while the “turbo brush” attachment goes to town on cat hair.
The Miele is distinguished by other details, such as a bumper protecting walls and furniture against scuff marks during cleaning. This is a top-of-the-line option because it has strong suction and an excellent seal. It also features a powerful six stage motor, which you can control with a foot pedal.
Overall, canister vacuums provide more suction. However, this means that the vacuum must be lugged around with you during cleaning. Our expert, who has used upright vacuum cleaners before, said that this wasn’t as much of an issue as it seemed. Our reviewer stated that she would prefer to not have to purchase more filters. “It just doesn’t feel good to throw away bags, environmentally and fiscally speaking.” On the plus side, the Miele is very quiet; so quiet in fact, our reviewer said her normally-scared-of-the-vacuum-cleaner chow mix stuck around to observe the machine in use.
I love everything, except for the vacuum bag. If you have a lot of thick carpet, this vacuum will shine. It performed admirably on both our hardwood floor and two rugs. The carpet was also great. It feels very solid, well balanced, and runs nicely, leading me to think it will hold up over the years.” For more about the Miele Complete C3, read our full verified review here
