Best Straw Cups For Baby

I was a new mom to multiples and had no experience with babies taking bottles. So, I reached out to other mothers of multiples to get some advice on caring for my Cub Twins after they finished using the bottles.

I have sincerely and truly (perhaps annoyingly to some) loved breastfeeding, but pumping milk and mixing formula in bottles was really not my favourite thing. The twins taking bottles allowed for me to help feed my children. However, pumping is exhausting, soul-sucking, and expensive. While I didn’t want to store bottles indefinitely, my twin-mom-mentor who also has experience with twins older than mine told me that she was happy to have her children weaned off bottles when they were one year old. In their 9th month, Cub Twins were still drinking 4 bottles daily. This included 3 bottles of formula and 2 bottles of expressed milk. They nursed at night. I stopped formula and switched to whole milk (dietitians recommend starting whole milk as early as 9 months as long as baby is eating an iron-rich diet) around that time, and I started serving that whole milk in a straw cup. If there was enough breastmilk, I used it to make the straw cups. They were introduced to water at 7 months.

Sippy cups seem like the natural next step following breastmilk or the bottle. I certainly did! My first and second children were exclusively breastfed, and when they started solids I gave them water in sippies. After they had stopped nursing at 2.5 years of age, both children started drinking water.

While sippy cups should not be used in excess, it is a good parenting habit. But, sipping out on sippy cups and opting for an open or straw cup instead can protect your teeth and prevent any future problems. You can also teach toddlers how to drink from an opened cup. My twins are too difficult for me to handle. They can handle straw cups on their own, which is what most twins do with older siblings. By age 11 they will be independent and ready to move out, straw cups in hand. The Miracle Cups have been tried by me but they never worked for them. My older children didn’t get to try them until age 2.

But it is not so simple. I know for certain that the Munchkin Click Locks weren’t a huge success so I returned them. Two Zoli BOTs were returned, as well as two Avent Bendy Straws. There are also two Pura Kikis.

ZoliBOT straw cups, which I also introduced to the twins as a drinking container, was my first.

I eventually replaced the twins’ afternoon bottles with afternoon Zoli BOTs filled with whole milk or my expressed milk. Zoli BOT straws have an x-shaped opening on the tips that stops liquid from running even if they are tipped upsidedown. This cup does not prevent spills. If you drop the cup from the highchair at the correct angle, there will be leaks.

For straws to truly suck, the straw needs to be completely immersed in their beverage. Baby can’t tip their cup or move their straws around, so the Zoli Bot straw has a weight that ensures the straw stays where it is supposed to be.

Zoli BOT’s straw is notoriously difficult to clean. The Zoli BOT straw brush is too small to fit in the narrow silicone straw. It’s also difficult to clean even with the ZoliBOT straw brush. It is best to only use the straw for water. The Zoli BOT straw is the most suitable option to introduce a straw for young children. It’s thin, flexible, and flexible, and it has a much lower leak rate than the Munchkin straw cups.

Because of the experience I had with Munchkin cups, Avent My Bendy Straw Cups made me skeptical. The good news is that the Avent cups work great, are easy to clean, are leak-resistant and, of course, affordable. The straws are wider and can be cleaned with a regular straw brush, but may be a bit too wide to be baby’s first straw like the Zoli.

You can also use the straw to pour smoothies since it’s wider. The straw isn’t weighted, but, as the name implies, it is bendy! It lies in the cup at a slightly angle, so it is submerged in liquid until almost nothing remains. The flip-up cover on this cup tends to get knocked off easily so I usually just leave it off.

You can make your baby happy with this 100% plastic-free container. Although this cup can be expensive, it is durable and can be used throughout life. It didn’t take the twins long to figure out the soft silicone straw spout, but in order of difficulty for them, it was the one that took the longest. You need to drop it or throw it at the right place (wrong?). It will start to leak at an angle.

Best Spouted Cups

For visitors or for use as travel, the First Years Take and Toss Cups are great for keeping around your home. You can reuse them over and again because they are inexpensive and sturdy. What if one gets lost? No biggie.

These are also available in a strawed option, which can be used to make smoothies. The straw is wider so it is easier for you to drink thicker liquids.

These cups, which are hourglass-shaped, can be held easily and are stable on the ground. They’re also very hard to tip. You can spillproof them with the removable valve. Wash well afterwards.

These sippy cups are too large (wider) to fit in some cup holders, such as strollers and carseats. But otherwise, they are perfect.

Boon Snug Lids 3 – $11 for 3 The tops of these sippy cups are versatile and smart enough to fit onto any cup. The straw version is also available. Just FYI, you will have to pinch and pull the spout each time you use the tops. Parents love these for ease of use and simplicity, and they work pretty darn well (plus they’re dishwasher safe).

It’s not the best product for chewers.

Re-Play No Slip Sippy Cups, $15 per 3, These sippy cups were made with recycled milk bottles (!!) USA. They have excellent leak control capabilities and are easy to maintain.

Re-Play sippies are not criticized much, though some parents have noted that it can sometimes be difficult to get toddlers to drink them.

Playtex Sipsters Insulated Sipsters cup $10 per pair Because they have double wall insulation, they’re great for hot summer days or long outings.

Best Soft-Spout Cup

These cup-loving parents say the cups are simple to assemble. The handles also make it easy for baby to grip.

The downside is that babies might bite the straw. This is something to be aware of.

Leakage can be a problem because it is difficult to put the top correctly. If the straw is damaged by biting, normal wear and tear or any other reason, it can leak.
