Jaclyn Therehana Garver Comment (9) Print may be slowly disappearing, but printed magazines can still be found in mailboxes. This is especially important for children and parents who want to reduce screen time.

Highlights would be my guess if I were to make a wager. A collection of brief fiction and informative pieces. Who could forget Goofus or Gallant? Their on-the nose names taught us lessons in morality and how to not be a complete jerk. Wikipedia: Goofus bosses his buddies. Gallant then asks: “What’s your next goal?” Gallant asks, “What do you want to do next?” I think there are some adults that could benefit from this lesson. Highlights magazine can still be purchased, though most of the other kid-friendly rags I love have disappeared. Teen People, Teen People (though it is no longer online), Barbie magazine and Disney Adventures are all gone. We’ve compiled a list to help you keep your kids entertained while in quarantine, as well as when they are able to resume their regular activities.

Each year around this time I publish a list of magazines for kids – a good ones for aunts, uncles, parents and grandparents to gift to little people for Christmas.

Magazines are the gift to keep on giving. With each new quarter or month comes a different part and it’s magical again. Also, magazines make great gifts for birthdays.

Below are the top 20 magazines that kids can read. I have one subscription to our primary school library. Your Kids Next Read members alerted me of new titles which I signed up for for my work. It is seriously great working in a school library and being able to choose the subscriptions – the Organic Gardener subscription in the library is potentially more about me than the little people who use our library, although I do like to share the articles with my Earth Angels group!

Wacky But True This one is good value for money as there are no ads and 11 issues in a subscription. All about our wacky world with short, informative articles on history, archaeology and nature, aimed at kids aged 8-15, but even adults say they love reading this mag. This magazine is pure fun, and the stories are true.

National Geographic Kids is a magazine that’s monthly for girls and boys aged 6-14. You’ll find all of the amazing stories and stunning images that you expect from National Geographic in bite-sized pieces. National Geographic Kids has everything a curious young mind could need.

I REALLY love the adult version of this mag, ‘Breathe’ and am so excited about this one – don’t disappoint me! Keep smiling. Do not be afraid. Be kind. Be Yourself…tips, fun activities and inspiring ideas to help you explore how paying attention to everything you do, being curious, kind and staying positive can bring out the very best of you. Teen Breathe Issue 1 goes on sale Thursday 4 January 2018. If you place your order before that date, the issue will arrive first.

The school loves this one. Double Helix, a science magazine by CSIRO, is a great choice for children and teens. Each issue contains a lot of fun and encourages critical thinking. For males and women aged between 8-14 years. The annual subscription contains 8 issues.

This article is specifically targeted at teens, which it does! I’ve got a nine year old right now and am quickly discovering that the TWEEN THING IS EPIC. According to the editor, “Let’s them be girls for awhile longer.” It’s a time when children are beginning to look around and engage with the world. The “tweens”, or the “tweens”, is special. The magazine is for children aged 3-6. It does not feature any brands, but it features The Wiggles and Thomas & Friends and Bob the Builder. My Little Pony and Fireman Sam are all featured. However, the magazine is perfect for sharing with small people. The parent/child interaction is wonderful. ChickPea had a great time with this book as she was young (her words). She clearly moved away from their age group at six!

The magazine has a lot of ‘brands’, but is actually quite fun to read and very popular in school. Every edition contains news, reviews, interviews with celebrities, competitions, music, movies and videos. Only Kidding doesn’t feature any junk food, or violent content which would be nice to see in a more mainstream magazine. Readers aged 7-13 are welcome.

Although it is hilarious to see how much this magazine is in demand, I guess pets will always be a beloved pet. All your questions about pets are answered in this magazine, which includes information about nutrition, behavior, grooming and training as well the most current accessories and profiles on the top dog breeds.

Sometimes we’d venture out of our comfort zone to explore other areas. On one particularly cold Tuesday, that was when we found the Children’s Periodical Section.
